First Grade
First grade is an exciting year where students demonstrate so much growth in their academic, social, and spiritual journey. Throughout the year we work in union with parents to challenge and grow the students. In the jump from Kindergarten to First grade, students begin to expand their knowledge and understanding of language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, character development, and the Catholic faith. This is a year where students learn to communicate effectively with their peers and build the confidence to branch out and meet new friends. In order to reach the needs of all students, we use a variety of different teaching strategies and differentiate our instruction to make sure that all students are given the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.
Academics
Language Arts
In first grade ELA, we use the Journey’s Curriculum among many additional resources to guide our students. Within this curriculum, we focus on phonics, fluency, reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and writing skills. Each week, students learn a new sound and eventually master their long and short vowel sounds, consonant blends, and digraphs. By the end of first grade, students are familiar with all first and second-grade level sight words, they are beginning to read chapter books fluently, and they are able to write descriptive sentences with appropriate nouns, verbs, and adjectives.
Math
In first grade math, we use the Eureka Curriculum to help plan our lessons, but supplement additional resources to help reach the needs of all students. Students begin to further their understanding of addition and subtraction by learning multiple ways to solve equations. Throughout the year, first-grade students will become proficient in identifying 3D shapes, measuring in inches and centimeters, addition, subtraction, and word problems.
Religion
Each week, students will attend mass on Fridays with the whole school. Together, we will spend time learning about each Sacrament and its importance. We will specifically focus on the purpose and essential rite of Baptism. We will build a classroom community by starting and ending each day with a prayer. By the end of the year, students will be able to recite the Sign of the Cross, the Hail Mary, the Our Father, the Glory Be, the Guardian Angel prayer and many more.
Science & Social Studies
In first grade, science and social studies give the students a chance to explore the world around them through hands-on and interactive activities. In science, we learn about animal habitats, life cycles, and the different states of matter. Students will dissect flowers to learn the different parts of a plant and will complete a habitat diorama of their choosing to create and present to the class. In social studies, we learn about the rules within a community and the different jobs that take place. Students will participate in a “Job Fair Wax Museum” to dive deeper into the unit and to practice their speaking skills.
