Third Grade
Third Grade
Third grade is a pivotal year in your child’s personal, academic and social growth. Each student’s independence and growth will be nurtured as the students explore a variety of new learning experiences. Third grade will explore new and exciting concepts in math and language arts. I will facilitate creative learning experiences which will allow the students to connect and apply what they are learning in the classroom to real world experiences. The students must gain a sense of self assurance and independence as they progress, which can be fostered through structured activities that allow for a sense of independence and creativity.
It is my ambition to foster learning in a safe and positive environment by ensuring that the developmental needs of each student are met through age appropriate, active and creative exploration of curriculum and subject matter. I believe in differentiated instruction, and intend to explore each child’s interests and varied learning styles throughout the year so that the lessons and activities are better tailored to their individual needs and interests.
I aim to bring an awareness of high expectations, open mindedness, compassion, and enjoyment into the classroom each day. It is essential that each student feel inspired, engaged, and open to learning, and it is vital that each student leaves the classroom each day with an overwhelming sense of pride in his or her achievements. I have great expectations for my students and it is imperative that I instill those same values in my students to ensure that each child sets those same extraordinary standards for him or herself as well.
Mathematics
In third grade math, we follow the Envision Curriculum, however, additional resources are used to help guide and support the students in achieving and meeting our goals throughout the year. The beginning of the first trimester is devoted to reviewing and practicing a variety of skills and concepts, including addition and subtraction skills, as a strong foundation in these skills will better equip and prepare the students for multiplication and division later in the year. As the year progresses, we will also begin to explore fractions and decimals, multi-step word problems, and an introduction to geometric shapes. While exploring these concepts in the classroom, we will utilize many different techniques, such as technology, games, movement activities, manipulatives and art. This will allow the students to explore the application of these concepts and will also help the students apply these concepts to the real-world.
Language Arts
We follow the Journeys curriculum in third grade, however, many additional resources are also utilized throughout the year to support the students in their learning. The Language Arts curriculum will allow us to explore a variety of skills in writing, reading, reading comprehension and grammar. Throughout the year the students will learn how to develop strong paragraphs, these paragraphs will include an introduction, three details and a concluding sentence. We will practice organization and development of our writing through the use of graphic organizers, and we will practice proofreading and editing. The students will work on the development of personal narratives, informational, creative and persuasive writing. In order to develop and practice and these skills, the students will have a Writer’s Workshop twice a week.
We will also work to improve our grammar skills, this means that we will continue to look at and improve our understanding of parts of speech, sentence structure, punctuation, and capitalization. The students will have the opportunity to practice their language arts skills in a variety of ways.
The students will complete a biography project. This will allow the students to utilize and apply a variety of the skills they are developing, such as reading, research skills, writing, and proofreading in an engaging way.
Our final writing project will be an autobiography, in which the students will explore their personal family history as well as their current goals and interests. This will allow the students to showcase their growth and development in writing.
Science
This year, our science curriculum will focus on life science, physical science, and Earth science. The units we will explore include the plant life cycle, animal life cycle, environments, matter, forces, energy, weather and clouds, the solar system, and many more.
Our major project in science is our 3-part solar system project, which will focus mainly on the planets. The students will complete the unit as a whole group. The students will then begin a research project, in which they will use both the textbook and approved online resources to research and write a 3-paragraph essay about the solar system. The students will then create a model of the solar system. To culminate this unit project, each student will give a class presentation.
Social Studies
Our social studies curriculum allows the students to learn about California history. The students will begin to look at maps and graphs as well. The students will also have the opportunity to learn about an important historical figure each month. This will be a person who changed the world, and will allow the students to see how different figures in history helped to shape and impact the world in a positive way.
