Second Grade
Working with 2nd graders is truly a blessing and an exciting experience as they prepare to receive their First Communion and their First Reconciliation. We will facilitate creative learning experiences which will allow the students to connect and apply what they are learning in the classroom to real world experiences. The students must gain a sense of self assurance and independence as they progress, which can be fostered through structured activities that allow for a sense of independence and creativity. It is our ambition to foster learning in a safe and positive environment by ensuring that the developmental needs of each student are met through age appropriate, active and creative exploration of curriculum and subject matter. We believe in differentiated instruction, and intend to explore each child’s interests and varied learning styles throughout the year so that the lessons and activities are better tailored to their individual needs and interests. We aim to bring an awareness of high expectations, open mindedness, compassion, and enjoyment into the classroom each day. It is essential that each student feels inspired, engaged, and open to learning, and it is vital that each student leaves the classroom each day with an overwhelming sense of pride in his or her achievements and accomplishments. We have great expectations for our students and it is imperative that we instill those same values in our students to ensure that each child sets those same extraordinary standards for him or herself as well.
The Religion curriculum is centered on the religion standards set forth by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles Department of Catholic Schools. The faith formation of the students at this age is imperative as they begin to reflect more on their lives and their moral duty as Christians. The students will also begin to explore the organization of the Catholic Church as well.
The English/Language Arts curriculum for 2nd Grade is centered around the California Common Core State Standards for English and Language Arts. The lessons are geared towards targeting the Common Core Anchor standards for reading and language. The students are working daily on improving their phonics, decoding words, and reading comprehension in our small group instructional periods. Mastering phonetic sounds and developing fluency are critical for second grade students, so I am incorporating different instructional strategies. We use platforms such as Google Classroom, Nearpod, and IXL to facilitate virtual learning. The Math curriculum for 2nd Grade is centered around the California Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. The lessons are geared towards improving their overall math fluency and building towards fundamental algebraic thinking. The students work with digital manipulatives to assist in their understanding of math facts and word problems. Developing their math fluency is critical at this age for being able to transition into multiplication, division, and fractions by the end of the year. We utilize platforms such as Nearpod, IXL, and Prodigy to assist with their learning.
The Social Studies curriculum is based on the California State Standards Social Studies. During 2nd grade Social Studies, the students learn more in depth about the role of government, influential American figures, American symbolism, the study of continents around the world, and North American geography. The students explore society through platforms such as Studies Weekly, Nearpod, and YouTube.
The Science curriculum is based on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The students explore a variety of topics pertaining to earth and life sciences. They explore habitats, environments, the life-cycles of plants and animals, geography, and topography throughout the course of the year. Students work with a variety of platforms such as Studies Weekly, Nearpod, and YouTube in their exploration of science.
We hope to motivate and inspire our students daily. All students can learn, but it is our privilege to provide stimulating lessons to support their own individual level. It is a huge responsibility to stand before our students of differing abilities and backgrounds and to meet the targeted needs of each of them. We want to make a difference in the world one student at a time.
