Fourth Grade
Welcome to 4th grade!
Fourth grade is a very important time in a child’s life. They’re over halfway through elementary school, officially making them big kids. This year will be full of a variety of educational adventures that will enhance the social, and spiritual growth of each student.
Fourth grade is when kids are being asked to learn and use skills more independently and are becoming more responsible. Children are more aware of current events and the state of the world. Students in fourth grade begin to take great ownership of their own learning.
As a teacher it is my job to support and encourage my students to maintain a positive outlook on learning. I want to motivate and inspire my students daily. All students can learn, but it is my job to provide stimulating lessons to support their own individual level. Seeing a students face excited to learn pushes me to plan and prepare more effectively. It is a huge responsibility to stand before my students of differing abilities and backgrounds and to meet the targeted needs of each of them. I want to make a difference in the world one student at a time.
Language Arts
In Language Arts we follow the Journeys curriculum in fourth grade. I will be using additional resources throughout the year to support the students in their learning. The Language Arts curriculum will allow us to explore a variety of skills in reading, writing, grammar, and reading comprehension. For example students will learn about nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Throughout the year students will also learn how to develop strong writing techniques. This will be done by practicing how to organize details through the use of graphic organizers.
In addition students will learn how to construct a strong paragraph with an introduction, three key details, and a conclusion. Students will have the opportunity to connect writing in Religion as they will be working on a project about Saints.
Students will also have the opportunity to express themselves by writing freely in their journals.
Mathematics
In fourth grade math, we follow the Envision Curriculum however, additional resources will be provided to help guide and support the students. The beginning of the first trimester is devoted to reviewing and practicing a variety of skills and concepts. The students will begin learning simple math problems and will increase in difficulty throughout the school year. This year the curriculum will include learning fractions, decimals, measurements, word problems, division, and multiplication. We will use different types of manipulatives to assist us in our learning. This year technology is going to play a large role in our learning. We will use Prodigy, Freckle, and Math playground. All of these resources are going to help the students throughout this academic school year.
Science
In science, students will learn about the scientific method while conducting experiments. Students will gain the basic knowledge of earth science as they study the effects of natural disasters, weather and learn about our solar system.
Social Studies
In Social Studies, students will learn how to study maps by using longitude and latitude. They will also recognize the state capital and regions of California. They will dig deep by navigating through the journeys of early Americans that focuses on both Native Americans and the early explorers.
Religion
Our class will work together to create a strong community in which members love and support one another. We will discuss the Sacraments that draw us together through the Church and God's call to us to build His community on earth by giving us the Ten Commandments as guidelines for loving our neighbor as Christ did. We will study each of the Commandments in depth and discuss how each applies to our daily lives. We will also learn about the lives of the Saints so that our students will have models of faith to look up to.
