A Note from the Principals

Happy Monday!

Carnival sign ups are open on schoolspeak!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our PTO meeting last week. The PTO is currently looking into getting quotes from security companies. In the meantime, we have set up a GoFundMe page for anyone who would like to contribute to paying for a security guard to start this school year. We estimate it will cost approximately $30,000 to have a full-time guard on campus from 7:30am to 6pm. We can fund some of that with the carnival fundraiser but if you'd like to contribute, here is the link:
https://gofund.me/da32a846

I pray that our campus continues to be a safe and welcoming place for everyone who is here.
St. Michael, the Archangel, protect us.

A Note About Tardiness

At SJF, we stress the need for students to get to school and class on time and with good reason. Studies conducted by the U.S. Department of Education on truancy, which is connected with tardiness, show that school attendance is a major factor when it comes to school success and student behavior. While it may only see like 5 or 10 minutes late, it directly impacts your child's success, disrupts the learning environment for all students in the class, and is a detriment to everyone’s learning.
Problems with Tardiness
The most crucial learning hours of a school day are the morning hours because they are when students are most attentive. Students who are tardy miss the beginning of their morning classes, and they also cause a distraction when they arrive late to class. We schedule reading and math blocks in the morning so that our students have the best opportunity to learn. Arriving late, impedes crucial learning in these two core subject areas. Academics and Achievement
Students who are frequently tardy have lower grade point averages (GPAs), lower scores on standardized assessments, and lower graduation rates. Chronic tardiness in elementary and middle school is also linked to failure in high school.
Behavior Problems
In the National Center for Education Statistics 2007 Indicators of School Crime and Safety, teachers surveyed reported that students who are frequently tardy have higher rates of suspension and other disciplinary measures. Tardiness causes students to feel disconnected with school, leading to behavior problems and dropouts.
Job Performance
Students who are frequently tardy to school are also more apt to be fired from a job for showing up late.
Effect on Others
When students are tardy, they negatively impact their teachers and other students. Teachers are often required to disrupt their teaching and learning environment to allow tardy students to catch up on their work. This often requires teachers to restructure their lessons or re-teach missed material. Tardiness also takes other students' attention away from a teacher's lesson, leading to more behavior concerns and missed instruction.

As a school community, we are here to help. Here are some suggestions to ensure your child arrives to school on time before the tardy bell rings at 7:45am.
1) Pack backpacks/lunchboxes the night before. The last thing you want to be doing as you are rushing out the door is trying to find lost homework. Make sure everyone’s backpacks are ready to go and prepare home lunches as much as you can. Also fill their water bottles ahead of time and store in the refrigerator.
2) Lay clothes out. Seems too simple to make a difference, but hunting down matching socks or pants without holes in the knees is quite the time consumer. Not only that, but you won’t have to worry that you didn’t notice your child was wearing shorts in colder weather until after you arrived at school.
3) Set up a “last stop” area. Pick any available area near the door you typically leave through and put everything there for the day: backpacks, phones, homework, and especially coats and shoes. There are no last-minute distractions this way.
4) Play a family favorite music list. Music can get people moving and can even turn a mood around. Pick upbeat songs that everyone enjoys. Play the same set each day so that everyone starts to recognize the cues and where they should be. For example, when the second song ends, breakfast is over. The third song ending means teeth should be brushed, and when the last song starts, they should be heading to get their coats and backpacks on.
5) If all else fails, wake up earlier and/or leave the house earlier. Not always the most enjoyable solution but often times, this will do the trick. Allowing yourself 5-10 extra minutes in the morning may also make for a calmer start to your day.

Saint of the Day 12/6
Every saint has a story & perhaps the best-known story about Saint Nicholas concerns his charity toward a poor man who was unable to provide dowries for his three daughters. Nicholas secretly tossed a bag of gold through the poor man’s window on three separate occasions, thus enabling the daughters to be married.

Saint Nicholas, pray for us. Read more below:

A Note from the Principals

I hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving with your family and friends. The teachers, staff, and I are so thankful for all of our SJF families. We know that you have many choices when it comes to educating your children and we are honored, every year, that you continue to choose St. Jane Frances.

We'd like to give a big thank you to all of the parents who coordinated our Thanksgiving feast. The students loved it!

Our PTO is in the middle of planing our Christmas Program celebration with food trucks, raffle items, and activities for the whole family. Tickets are on sale today for $10 a person (SJF students get in free!).

Today was the first day of our new lunch service and it was DELICIOUS! If you are interested in ordering lunch for tomorrow, you can order up until midnight! https://organickidsla.com/

Our Fall book fair is next week! Flyers are going home today and this week is the perfect time to set up your child's e-wallet so they don't need to bring cash to school :)

Our school carnival is coming up iFebruary 17-19. This will be a very big event for the school- please save the date and be on the lookout for more information in the next few weeks!

Saint of the Day 11/28
Every saint has a story & after earning doctorates in canon and civil law at the University of Perugia, Saint James of the Marshes joined the Friars Minor and began a very austere life. He fasted nine months of the year; he slept three hours a night.

Saint James, pray for us. Read more below:

Media and technology are at the center of kids' lives every day. From a very young age, kids use technology at home and at school to connect with friends and family and to document their lives and create digital content of their own. With more and more of life happening online, what catches kids' attention isn't always what's best for them, and what companies do with their personal information isn't always clear. This website makes it easy to make informed decisions for your family.

Saint of the Day 11/14
Every saint has a story & Saint Gertrude the Great practiced a spirituality called “nuptial mysticism,” that is, she came to see herself as the bride of Christ. Her spiritual life was a deeply personal union with Jesus and his Sacred Heart, leading her into the very life of the Trinity.

Saint Gertrude, pray for us. Read more below:

Cold/Inclement Weather
Plain, solid-colored navy blue, red, or white sweatshirts, pullover jackets, sweaters, or rain jackets that have no wording or insignia can be worn in addition to a St. Jane Frances de Chantal School jacket. Larger jackets must be removed when in the classroom. Please keep in mind that storage is limited in the classroom and jackets and coats should be sized appropriately. Students may come to school wearing rubber boots but they must be removed and regulation shoes worn during the school day.

During rainy days we will open the school lot for drop off or pickup. PLEASE drive slowly and carefully while on the school campus. Use the victory parking lot as the "in" gate and the Hampin gate as the "exit."

Good afternoon SJF Families!

I am excited to share some amazing data with all of you!
Last month, the superintendent of LAUSD put out a message about school performance before and after the pandemic (read it HERE). She stated that "state scores fell 4% in english and 6.35 % in math. LA county scores fell 3.23% in english and 6.25% in math" between Fall 2019 and Spring 2022. We are proud to share that when we compare St. Jane Frances students' average scaled scores from Fall 2022 to Spring 2022 we had an INCREASE of 11.07% in english and 13.99% in math! In fact, Catholic schools in general have outperformed public schools nationwide. Here is a great article if you'd like to read further: AmericaMagazine.org
THANK YOU to our amazing teachers for going above-and-beyond for our students over the past two years!
